The Cricket Ground

The earliest Cricket Club in Walhalla dates back to 1870, although it was not until 1882 that the Excelsior Cricket Club arranged for the top of Recreation Hill to be cleared and levelled by hand to form Walhalla's distinctive Cricket Ground.

It's a long hike up to the Cricket Ground, and uphill all the way, a fact that early sports teams used to their advantage -- they were said to make the climb the day before in order to be fully recovered by the time their opponents arrived in town for a match!
